History of the United States Army
The United States Army was officially founded on June 14, 1775, making it the oldest branch of the United States military. Originally formed as the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, it was established to defend the colonies under the command of General George Washington.
Since then, the Army has played a major role in nearly every major conflict in American history — from the Revolutionary War and Civil War to World War II, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
The Birth of the U.S. Army
The roots of today’s United States Army trace back to the Continental Army formed during the American Revolutionary War. Under the command of General George Washington, American forces famously crossed the Delaware River on Christmas night in 1776 before launching the surprise Battle of Trenton — one of the most iconic moments in American military history.
The First Army Uniforms
During the early years of the American Revolutionary War, many Continental Army soldiers fought wearing a mix of civilian clothing, hunting shirts, militia gear, and locally supplied uniforms. Supplies were limited, and there was little standardization between units.
As the Continental Army became more organized under General George Washington, dark blue coats gradually became the primary color associated with the American Army. White waistcoats, tricorn hats, leather equipment, and regional uniform distinctions helped shape the identity of America’s first national fighting force.
