History of the United States Coast Guard
The roots of the United States Coast Guard trace back to August 4, 1790, when Congress authorized the creation of the Revenue-Marine, later known as the Revenue Cutter Service, at the request of Alexander Hamilton.
The modern Coast Guard was formed in 1915 when the Revenue Cutter Service merged with the U.S. Life-Saving Service. Today, the Coast Guard is known for maritime safety, search and rescue, law enforcement, homeland security, environmental protection, and military readiness.
