Where the Slide Top Crate Idea Came From

Before modern plastic storage bins, quick-release latches, and mass-produced range boxes, many military and utility crates relied on simple wooden construction and sliding lids. The design was practical: fewer moving parts, no hinges to break, no latch hardware sticking out, and a lid that could be removed or slid open quickly.

The Traditional Slide Top Ammo Crate brings that older crate style into the Freedom Crate Co. lineup. It is made for customers who want a more classic wooden ammo crate look — something that feels closer to old military shipping crates, workshop storage boxes, and field gear containers.

Why a Slide Top Design?

The Traditional Slide Top Ammo Crate was designed to capture the look and simplicity of early military shipping crates. Rather than using hinges, toggle latches, or other lid hardware, the removable top can either be lifted straight off or slid off from the front or rear of the crate.

The result is a cleaner, more traditional appearance while reducing the number of moving parts. It's a design that's simple, rugged, and true to the wooden field crates that inspired it.

The Engineering Behind the Crate

While the design looks simple, considerable thought went into how the lid is retained. Unlike many slide-top boxes, there are no routed grooves or slide rails built into the crate itself.

Instead, the corner support legs serve a dual purpose. In addition to protecting the bottom of the crate and allowing multiple crates to stack securely, they also prevent the lid from shifting side to side during normal use. This keeps the lid properly aligned while still allowing it to be removed easily whenever access is needed.

Because there are no rails to wear out or bind, the design remains durable and easy to manufacture while preserving the clean, traditional look of historic wooden utility crates. It's an intentionally minimalist approach that emphasizes function, reliability, and timeless craftsmanship.

The crate body is designed around strength, alignment, and repeatable assembly. Each crate is cut, assembled, sanded, painted, and finished by hand. The slide-top construction keeps the design rugged while reducing the amount of exposed metal hardware on the box.

Handle Options

The Traditional Slide Top Ammo Crate is offered with two handle options:

Base Interior or Armor Core Interior

Choose between a standard base interior or the upgraded Armor Core™ Interior. The base interior keeps the crate closer to a classic raw wood utility crate. Armor Core adds a tougher interior coating designed for added protection.

Built for Ammo, Range Gear, and Display

This crate is built for shooters, collectors, veterans, history-minded customers, and anyone who wants a handcrafted wooden ammo crate with a more old-school design. It works well for ammo storage, range gear, magazines, tools, keepsakes, garage storage, and patriotic display.
